Each of us has at least once faced classical topographic maps - whether at school at geography lessons, or while being a traveler. These maps are famous for creating a very accurate presentation of the area. They display all the objects with the help of scaling and using different lines. Though topographic maps represent by the highest standards a set of symbols that are not so simple for a customary user to understand. Sometimes you need a specialist to explain all the features on the map. Whatever the case, it will take some efforts and time to learn the topography language. Fortunately, there are plenty of other methods to depict a landscape. They are numerous, but can be divided into 3 groups: - Illustrated maps - Panoramic maps - Pictorial maps You can guess what these kinds of maps constitute by their names, but nevertheless we'll give some explanation to avert probable confusion. In such a way, an illustrated map represents a topographic map with some added illustrations. It means that individual objects on the map (for example, churches, parks or some other features) will be marked by little icons. This type of maps is the closest one to the standard variant. A panoramic map may be regarded as a portrait of the landscape. Now and then it is also called a perspective because it depicts a certain zone like it is viewed from a certain point in space. These maps are very accurate about dimensions, but on the other hand, different individual objects are scarcely recognizable or even not recognizable at all. This kind of maps is widespread in certain fields of activity like ski resorts pictures. As far as pictorial map is concerned this type is focused on the details, but not at keeping accurate sizes. Individual objects are depicted with their distinguishing features and, accordingly, are easily distinguishable. On the other hand, distances don't always comply with the reality, now and then the landscape can be slightly reduced or distorted since the emphasis is placed on the representation of objects. The named kind of maps enjoys wide popularity due to their nice appearance, self-descriptiveness and easiness in use. In spite of scale distortions they are excellent for navigating when planning a travel or seeking a certain place. |
